In the centre of Quito’s Plaza Grande is a liberty statue commemorating August 10, 1809 when Ecuador declared independence from Spain. However, this initial movement was ultimately defeated, but on May 24, 1822 victory was achieve and marked the independence of Quito and the surrounding areas.
